K. Paddayya, Emeritus Professor of Archaeology and former Director of Deccan College (Deemed University) in Pune, taught archaeology at the postgraduate level for well over three decades. His prolonged field investigations of Palaeolithic and Neolithic sites of the Shorapur Doab in Southern Deccan and the innovative methodological and theoretical approaches adopted by him in these studies have found a secure place in Indian archaeology. Paddayya has also made significant contributions to history and theory of archaeology. His major publications include The Acheulian Culture of the Hunsgi Valley: A Settlement Perspective (1982), Essays in History of Archaeology (2013) and Multiple Approaches to the Study of India?s Early Past (2014). He is an elected Honorary Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London. He was honoured with the title Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2012.
